Yesterday I (Gianfranco), Mari and Janet worked with Dawn and Mike. Mike has been grading the site during the past few days and he did an amazing job. He explained to us his method of measuring the length of the path by putting stakes along the center of the path and stringing them together, and using increments of four feet he calculated the length. Then he measured the drop along each of the four feet increments and added them together for the total drop. He used the length and the drop to calculate the slope of the path. He then tied a string between the stakes along the side of the path, making sure that the string ran down the path at the desired slope. And, finally, he used a level between the two sides of the path to ensure a flat cross-slope.
He then showed me how to grade the existing surface to the new calculated slope. Because he was going to add 2" of road base and 2' of decomposed granite, he needed the existing land graded to 4" below the final proposed surface. My job was to fine tune the grade making sure of its evenness, which needed some work. We also witnessed the arrival of the delivery truck which brought in the road base. We distributed the road base on top of the existing grade, which will later be topped by two additional inches of decomposed fine granite (ADA compliant). Finally, after having finished grading, we tamped down the soil to compact it.
Overall it was hard work, but fun!!
