About a month ago Benjamin and I (Elizabeth) worked on finishing the weeding at the construction site at Blake Garden. Lauri showed us the site and the areas that still needed to be cleared. She showed us what tools to use and where to put the weeds that we pulled up. The site was already staked at this point and the majority of the weeds had been cleared in the main area, but there were still weeds growing randomly throughout the site and more clearing needed to be done down the slope and at the western end to make the area larger. We used shovels and spades and a wheelbarrow. I worked on clearing the western end and extending the site down the hill while Benjamin pulled out all the remaining weeds in the main portion of the site.
Since Benjamin works as a landscape designer and gardener, he showed me techniques for weeding efficiently so we could clear the area fast. I learned to loosen the soil with a shovel so that I could easily pull up the weeds and get the roots. I also learned how it is really great to use the debris from weeding to create a berm elsewhere on the site. We filled up the wheelbarrow multiple times and then rolled it over to a steep area on the site that needed a berm to protect visitors from falling off the edge.
It was hard work but a lot of fun and I learned lots about weeding!
